Christmas memories of another era

Christmas memories of another era

Christmas in South Africa in my early days holds wonderful memories for me. The days leading up to Christmas, which generally started around 1st December, was filled with fun Christmas activities; sending out Christmas cards, gift hunting, baking, the sound of good old-fashioned Christmas carols, decorating the tree, and putting up the 'trimmings' as we called the decorations then, and the excitement of family time. We were always however, reminded of the reason for the celebrations - of the baby in the manger. We loved the story.

On Christmas morning we headed for church to start the day in true 'Christmas fashion, where we heartily joined in singing 'Away in a manger, Hark the herald angels sing, and my favorite, Silent night, amongst others.

After church we headed home where we had a light breakfast and excitedly awaited the arrival of the rest of the clan; grandparents, and parents, siblings and cousins all arrived armed with their gifts and stacked them under the Christmas tree.

Champagne and home baked savory delectables were served and everyone settled down to the gift exchange. The air was one of joy and togetherness, and peaceful, and everyone looked happy - especially the children because, this was kiddies time!

One of the adults, dressed up as 'Father Christmas' handed out the gifts, and soon chaos ensued. Gift wrapping was hurriedly torn off the gifts and children excitedly exclaimed their delight when the desired gifts were opened, or groaned in disappointment when those gifts did not surface. It was chaotic and fun and I loved it!

The rest of the day followed in like fashion - a day of togetherness; of family, and of neighbors and friends popping by in the afternoon.

Except for slight changes to the original procedures of our Christmas celebrations over the years, four generations later our Christmas tradition continues in like vein. Tradition works for me!

Christmas is celebrated in many different ways around the world, and in whichever way you celebrate it, I wish you peace, joy, and happiness with your loved ones.
